Genii and Giants

The giants were the offspring of the Watchers. The Book of Enoch describes how the giant offspring of the Watchers consumed “all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beast, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another’s flesh, and drink the blood.” (Enoch 7: 3-5)

Were the “genii” in other words the giants? In the Arab world, belief in Genii was prevalent long before the time of Mahomet. The Genii inhabited solitary places. The desert whirlwinds were thought to be caused by the Genii. Moslem folklore has it that the earth had been originally peopled by these Genii. But the Genii (Giants?) had rebelled against the Almighty and usurped dominion over the earth. After 2,000 years, Azazil was sent to battle against the Genii. Azazil defeated the Genii and overthrew their mighty king Gian ben Gian, the founder of the pyramids. King Gian ben Gian’s magic buckler of talismanic virtue subsequently came into the possession of King Solomon. As for the Genii, who had rebelled against the Almighty, they were driven into an obscure corner of the earth. (Background: Return of the Arabian Nights, Ersjdamoo’s Blog entry of September 13, 2013.)

Enoch was told by the Lord that, “now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling.” (Enoch 15: 8)

The Genii inhabit solitary places. They had been driven into an “obscure corner” of the earth. As for the Giants, after they had been slaughtered their spirits went forth to destroy without incurring judgment. (Enoch 16: 1)

Another of the so-called apocryphal texts, The Book of Jubilees (a.k.a. The Little Genesis), tells how, “When the children of men began to multiply on the face of the earth and daughters were born to them, and the angels of God saw them on a certain year of this jubilee, that they were beautiful, and they took themselves wives of all whom they chose, and they gave birth to their sons and they were giants.” (Jubilees 5: 1) These Giants embraced the heresy of “exceptionalism”, meaning an enlarged ego and departure of a proper sense of one’s place in the universe. (Later the Jews, the “chosen people”, fell into this same error of exceptionalism. The Nazis, in a counter-reaction to the Jews, claimed that it was they, the “master race”, who were exceptional and not the Jews. Currently Rush Limbaugh promotes this same heresy, calling it “American exceptionalism.”)

And what happened to the Giants, the first recorded followers of “exceptionalism”? “Because of them lawlessness increased on the earth and all flesh corrupted its way.” (Jubilees 5: 2) Eventually, just like the Genii, banished to an obscure corner of the earth, the Watchers “are bound in the middle of the earth, and are kept separate.” (Jubilees 5: 6) As for the Giants, were their spirits also banished to some “obscure corner”? Emanuel Swedenborg (1688 – 1772) claimed the evil spirits of the Giants are now imprisoned in Hell where they are “enclosed by their phantasies by what seems like a misty rock, out of which they are continually striving, but in vain, to rise up.” (For further details, see my book, Melchizedek Communique. 2010. The folk tales of Syria abound with mention of these Genii, evil spirits of the Giants, or call them what you will. The female Genii are called ghouleh. The male Genii are called afreet. In “The Muhafaza of Rural Damascus”, part of author Muna Imady’s book, Syrian Folktales, three brothers encounter one of these ghouleh (female Genii). The two haughty elder brothers fail to realize that what appears to be a kindly elderly woman is not as she seems. But the third brother, Nuss-insais, who rides only a donkey and is so short as to be nicknamed Tiny, figures out that this elderly “auntie” is in fact a ghouleh! Nuss-insais tricks the ghouleh and traps her in a trunk filled with cheap jewelry.
