Our Friend, The Ether (Part 1)

The Ether is not to be confused with ether, a liquid once used in medicine to prevent patients from feeling pain during operations. The Ether, a medium which fills all space, including space already occupied (such as by planets), is also called The Luminiferous Ether. It has been called “Luminiferous” because The Ether is the medium which bears the light waves. The Ether is also sometimes called Æther, suggesting a substance more rarefied than fire. (Further background: In the Bosom of The Ether, Ersjdamoo’s Blog entry of October 2, 2013.)

The name Æther “suggests a far more subtle or penetrating and ultra-material kind of substance.”

Isaac Newton surmised heat also, besides light waves, was carried by The Ether. Newton described how two thermometers placed in separate glass tubes and suspended so as not to touch the glass – with one thermometer in vacuo and the other not – nonetheless reacted to heat and cold in a similar way. Two thermometers in sealed glass tubes. The air is removed from one of the tubes, leaving a vacuum. Yet when these two tubes were carried “out of a cold place into a warm one”, the thermometer in vacuo “will grow warm as much and almost as soon as the Thermometer which is not in vacuo.” So how was heat carried into the vacuum tube? Asks Newton, “Is not the Heat of the warm Room conveyed through the Vacuum by the Vibrations of a much subtiler Medium than Air? And is not this Medium the same with that Medium by which Light is [transmitted], and by whose Vibrations Light communicates Heat to Bodies?”

“And is not this Medium exceedingly more rare and subtile than the Air, and exceedingly more elastic and active? And doth it not readily pervade all bodies?”

Newton surmised that The Ether fills all space “without leaving any Pores” and “by consequence is much denser than Quick-silver and Gold…”

Sir Oliver Lodge advocated a view of The Ether which made it “not only uniformly present and all-pervading, but also massive and substantial beyond conception. It is turning out to be by far the most substantial thing – perhaps the only substantial thing – in the material universe.” (“In him we live and move and have our being” – Acts 17: 28. See also, Jesus Is The Ether, Ersjdamoo’s Blog entry of October 1, 2013.)

James Clerk Maxwell, Scottish mathematician and physicist, opined: “Whatever difficulties we may have in forming a consistent idea of the constitution of the æther, there can be no doubt that the interplanetary and interstellar spaces are not empty, but are occupied by a material substance or body, which is certainly the largest, and probably the most uniform body of which we have any knowledge.”
