In February 1855, in England, something strange happened. After a heavy snowfall, trails of hoof-like marks appeared overnight in the snow covering a total distance of some 40 to 100 miles. Called the “Devil’s Footprints”, these hoof-marks travelled straight over houses, rivers, haystacks and other obstacles. (Depiction above)
A news report from the time described the situation as follows:
“It appears on Thursday night last, there was a very heavy snowfall in the neighbourhood of Exeter and the South of Devon. On the following morning the inhabitants of the above towns were surprised at discovering the footmarks of some strange and mysterious animal endowed with the power of ubiquity, as the footprints were to be seen in all kinds of unaccountable places – on the tops of houses and narrow walls, in gardens and court-yards, enclosed by high walls and pailings, as well in open fields.”
Might these “Devil’s Footprints” have been caused by the inhabitants of Laputa, described by Jonathan Swift as a flying island which its inhabitants can maneuver in any direction using magnetic levitation? The Laputans are known to be obsessed with mathematics. They could have been leaving the strange marks, the “Devil’s Hoofprints”, periodically as markers for some sort of measurements they were doing. (Further background: Our Friend, The Ether (Part 13), Ersjdamoo’s Blog entry of November 6, 2013.)
The magnetic levitation used by the Laputans must involve both the electro-magnetic field and the gravitational field. Both of these fields, thought to be distinct, can be “unified” by The Ether.
Nikola Tesla had studied the writings of 19th-century “ether physicists” such as Sir Oliver Lodge. One such early “ether physicist” had been Augustin-Jean Fresnel. From his studies of wave optics, Fresnel was disposed to believe that the luminiferous ether pervaded the substance of all material bodies with little or no resistance (i.e., viscosity). Material atoms pass through the ether and do not displace it. The Ether is almost like a halfway point between spirit and matter. (Of course, since the “scientists” cannot measure spirit, they treat spirit like it doesn’t exist. For example, “scientists” once conducted a careful dissection of a human body and could locate no soul. Hence they decided the soul does not exist! The situation with The Ether is akin to the “extremely rarefied” condition of the soul.)
The earth, a material body travelling through space, is constantly passing through The Ether. The Ether, extremely rarefied yet also dense, contains both positive and negative electric potential. These electric charges are deposited on atoms. It is the motion of matter through the stationary Ether which constantly provides electric energy. The gravitational force, in turn, is induced when the planets are oscillated by electrical currents.
As the planets travel through the “ether wind” (really a “wind” created by the planets as they pass through the stationary Ether), there are “dielectric displacements”, one within the mass and the other in the “ether wind” outside the mass. This results in a “down force” (negative polarity), i.e. “gravity.”
These forces are used by the Laputans on their flying island, reported Gulliver. “The flying or floating island is exactly circular, its diameter 7,837 yards, or about four miles and a half, and consequently contains ten thousand acres. It is three hundred yards thick.” The ruler of Laputa has it in his power to levitate (anti-gravity) the island “above the region of clouds and vapours…” This is accomplished by means of a giant loadstone (magnetism). “By means of this loadstone, the island is made to rise and fall [anti-gravity and gravity] and move from one place to another [electro-propulsion].”
