Esoteric Shakespeare (Part 15)

Coriolanus National Theatre Live Trailer starring Tom Hiddleston

It looked bad for Caius Marcius Coriolanus in the Spear Shaker play, Coriolanus. The plotters and their gang might throw him off the steep Tarpeian rock! In the end, though, in “the name of the people”, Coriolanus was exiled:

… in the name of the people, and in the power of us the tribunes, we, even from this instant, banish him our city; in peril of precipitation from off the rock Tarpeian… (Act III, Scene 3)

And so too did things look bad for Viktor Yanukovych, President of Ukraine. In Kiev, Yanukovych and his family received death threats and his car was shot at. [1]

What were these “death threats” against Viktor Yanukovych? Imagine the following:

Dear Yanukovych,
Leave Kiev immediately, or we will throw you from off the rock Tarpeian.
      (signed) Svoboda

In the play Coriolanus, the tribunes Junius Brutus (John McCain) and Sicinius Velutus (Victoria Nuland) are seemingly on the side of “the people.” (Background: Esoteric Shakespeare (Part 14), Ersjdamoo’s Blog entry of March 4, 2014.)

And so too does Svoboda, a Ukrainian nationalist political party, claim to represent “the people.” (But Svoboda is far-right and anti-Semitic, so which “people” do they truly represent?)

Sighs Caius Marcius Coriolanus in the Spear Shaker play, “The beast with many heads butts me away.” (Act 4, Scene 1) And so he begins his journey away from Rome. Later, in Act 4, Scene 3, there is a “news update”: On a highway between Rome and Antium, two men discuss the latest talk:

ROMAN: There hath been in Rome strange insurrections.

VOLSCE: Hath been! is it ended, then? Our state thinks not so: they are in a most warlike preparation, and hope to come upon them in the heat of their division.

ROMAN: The main blaze of it is past, but a small thing would make it flame again; for the nobles receive so to heart the banishment of that worthy Coriolanus, that they are in a ripe aptness to take all power from the people, and to pluck from them their tribunes for ever.

In recent installments of this series, Esoteric Shakespeare, vague parallels have been seen between the Coriolanus situation and that of Ukraine. An idea for a new movie has even occurred, tentatively titled, “Coriolanus in Ukraine.” And now, from the talk between the Roman and the Volsce (above), further Spear Shaker soothsaying has occurred to Ersjdamoo.

The Volsce (above) thinks the “strange insurrections” might not be over. Sure, John Kerry has immediately ordered $1 billion to be sent to Ukraine (which money we sorely need here in Illinois). But how stable will the new putsch government in Kiev be, even with the John Kerry billion?

The Volsce (above) says his state is in “a most warlike preparation.” In the vague parallel, this is Russia. The Roman (above) implies that there are some in Ukraine not happy about the new far-right anti-Semitic government violently installed in Kiev. The soothsaying says this: that Russia will just wait for the new Ukraine situation to fall apart. Once that happens, Russia will be forced to “restore order” in Ukraine. (Just like the United States sometimes “restores order” in Nicaragua.) And, arriving with the Russians in Kiev will be “Coriolanus” (Viktor Yanukovych) as a symbol of legitimacy.
