Norman Rockwell’s 1943 April Fool’s Day cover for the Saturday Evening Post is full of enigmas, if you look closely. For example, examine the clock on the fireplace mantel and you will notice instead of numbers “A P R I L F O O L”.
So too if you look closely at the Ukraine crisis you will see it is filled with enigmas: things mysterious, puzzling, or difficult to understand.
In December 2013 Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, distributed cookies to protestors in Kiev’s Maidan Square. Also in Kiev in December 2013 was Senator John McCain. He, along with Senator Chris Murphy, “told a crowd of hundreds of thousands of protesters that Ukraine’s future lies to the west, not the east.”
Victoria Nuland is married to Robert Kagan. Kagan is one of the signers of the Project for the New American Century manifesto titled Rebuilding America’s Defenses (2000). In fact Kagan is one of the founders and directors of the “now defunct” Project for the New American Century. Kagan’s Project for the New American Century is famous (or infamous) for advising in 2000 that America needed “some catastrophic and catalysing event – like a new Pearl Harbor”. Then Lo! The surreal events of September 11, 2001 (9/11) provided the “new Pearl Harbor!”
In early February 2014, Victoria Nuland, in a leaked phone conversation with the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, was famously (or infamously) heard to say, “F**k the E.U.” Nuland also says, in the leaked phone conversation, “I think Yats is the guy who’s got the economic experience, the governing experience.” Yats is, in other words, Arseniy Yatseniuk, one of the opposition leaders at the time. Nuland was speaking of Yats in the context of who would replace Viktor Yanukovych once his government had been overthrown. And Lo! Later in February, Arseniy Yatseniuk did become the new Prime Minister of Ukraine after Viktor Yanukovych had to flee Kiev consequent to death threats and at least one assassination attempt. (Further background: Esoteric Shakespeare (Part 15), Ersjdamoo’s Blog entry of March 5, 2014.)
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama, according to a recent article in Rolling Stone magazine, is resisting war pressures coming from the likes of Senator John McCain, Senator Lindsey Graham, and Senator Ted Cruz. The situation now could be that Obama is working to prevent an escalation of hostilities between Russia and the United States.
In the Rolling Stone version of things, Obama had last year been faced with pressure from the National Security Council to launch missiles against Syria. Obama had “boxed himself in” when he made his “red line” statement about chemical weapons in Syria. Then, when “Adam and Eve ate the apple” (so to speak), it was “High Noon” at Damascus. Rolling Stone reports that, in the end, Obama “seized upon diplomacy instead of war…”
Well, maybe. It does seem like some people are all calling President Obama a wimp these days about how he has been responding to the Ukraine crisis. On the other hand, maybe Obama is working now against pressure from hawks to increase war tensions with Russia. After Afghanistan and Iraq, do we really want more of the same?
As for the hawkish pressure to launch missiles against Syria last August, as it turns out the sarin gas “red line” attack was really a “false flag” operation staged by Turkey, according to an exposé by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh. Turkey, a NATO member, also “recently shut off access to YouTube after someone posted a video of a secret meeting of government officials at which the head of Turkish intelligence discussed staging another provocation inside Syria, such as an attack on a mosque, to provide a pretext for military intervention.”
As of this writing, the situation is tense in eastern Ukraine. There, a confrontation between local anti-Kiev dissidents and the Ukrainian armed forces appears to be imminent. A force of 40,000 Russian troops is said to be mobilized at the border, ready to possibly intervene. Are the hawks about to get their wish – and then some? And what would happen to Europe if Russia shuts off the gas due to unpaid debts by Ukraine? (Remember from the movie “Mad Max” about who really controls Barter Town.) Let’s see what happens tomorrow, Friday, April 11th.
