Larry C. Johnson, a former analyst at the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, belongs to a group of former US intelligence agents who are attempting to get President Barack Obama to change course and defuse the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Via a petition, the former spooks hope to de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine.
In Washington, DC, agitators for conflict are rife right now. There, many Republicans and Democrats are trying to resurrect the language and the images of the Cold War. President Obama is being hit from the right and he’s sort of stumbling on the left, stated Johnson via an interview broadcast on the Russia Today video streaming network.
This idea of Obama being “boxed in” by hawks in Washington had earlier been reported by Rolling Stone magazine. Reportedly, war pressures are coming from the likes of Senator John McCain, Senator Lindsey Graham, and Senator Ted Cruz. (Further background: Ukraine Is April Fool?, Ersjdamoo’s Blog entry of April 10, 2014.)
On May 6, 2014, on the same page of the local newspaper, were two Associated Press reports: (1) “Defense bill preserves gear, cuts readiness”, and (2) “Elite guard sent to retake port city”. On the one hand money for the Pentagon was being reduced; on the other hand – Lo! – “pitched gunbattles” in Odessa, Ukraine might eventually lead to the Pentagon needing more, not less, money.
John McCain and the Pentagon are surely jumping for joy at this happenstance: that at the 11th-hour, when Pentagon was about to get a belt-tightening – Lo! – a potential World War III appears like a godsend in Ukraine.
Gayane Chichakyan, a reporter for Russia Today, was wondering about the coincidence of Vice President Joe Biden going to Kiev and the sending in of troops to the dissident east of Ukraine. A similar seeming coincidence had occurred when DCIA John Brennan went to Kiev. So, at a U.S. State Department briefing, she naturally asked about this. The State Department spokesperson, Jen Psaki, quickly rebuffed the question with a haughty, “I think we’re ready to move on.” (This haughty evasion happened on or about April 25, 2014.)
The haughty imperial atmosphere at these State Department press briefings is a wonder to behold. Even Gayane Chichakyan spoke in a hushed tone before the “almighty” State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki. There is no New York Bronx atmosphere allowed for reporters ushered into the mighty presence of Oz the Magnificent! All must bow like Dorothy. “I am Jen Psaki! Who are you, and why do you seek me!?”
Of course later Dorothy finds out that Oz the Magnificent is a big fake.
Russia, for its part, had at first said it would defend Russian speaking people in Ukraine. But then, after the Odessa Massacre of May 2, 2014, in which Molotov cocktails led to a deadly fire, Russia switched gears and said, “The West is trying to provoke us into war.” Just when you thought Vladimir Putin would hit the ceiling and send in the Chechens, the Russian President surprised us by not jumping at the alleged bait. (Background: Send In The Chechens!, Ersjdamoo’s Blog entry of May 3, 2014.)
A circumstance about the Odessa Massacre is that, once again, there is a diplomacy coincidence: this time it was the visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Washington, DC. Maybe some other reporter could reasonably notice and ask about these diplomacy coincidences – DCIA Brennan, Joe Biden, Angela Merkel. Then again, the State Department would just be haughty as usual, or claim that the Wicked Witch of the East was tyrannizing the Munchkins, so why bother.
