The burden of collective guilt was increasing. Some goat had to be found to carry away the sins of the world. Vladimir Putin seemed strong enough for the job. Bashar Assad had been tried for the task of scapegoat, but he was an eye doctor and didn’t exactly fit the role. Putin, on the other hand, had been a KGB officer and besides he was always baring his chest, as if to say, “I dare you.”
Barack Obama, since 2008, had been popping up like a Jack-in-the-box and saying, “It is time we had a frank and open discussion about race in America.” Then “Jack” would go back in the box and it would be no longer time for the frank and open discussion. But whenever pressure in the box built up, then out again would pop “Jack” and say, “It is time we had a frank and open discussion about race in America.”
“Jack” is out of the box again, after Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) pressures had become too great. When “Storm Roof” pushed the spring, out again popped “Jack.” The Maoist re-education camps once more began to be mobilized. But would “Jack” again just go back into his box?
A campaign against “counterrevolutionary elements” was launched in China in July 1950. The aim was to “reform thought”. The “counter-revolutionaries” were “forced to undergo regular periods of ‘reeducation’…” The “counter-revolutionaries” were criticized and they had to criticize themselves. “If they repented completely, they were then invited to participate in investigative groups and to denounce their colleagues.” The ones who did not cooperate found that “Jack” would pop out of the box and the “reeducation” would start again. “Counter-revolutionaries” in China had to attend “submission and rebirth” meetings and confess their “errors.”
Well someone had to be blamed! Else people might look inward and blame themselves! They might have dreams in the night where scary persons would say, “Thou! Thou art the sinner!” From that could come that they were not unique and that all were the sinners. Then the people might humble themselves and the next thing you know they’d turn away from big government and towards the Almighty instead.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7: 14)
Big government wasn’t working. It had been “saving” the people from narcotics, poverty, and now poor health – and things kept getting worse. Lest this be perceived, scapegoats needed to be found.
René Girard, working in the field of anthropological history, found that the death of Jesus concealed a corporate murder. Society tended to transfer collective guilt (the unbearable realization that we are all sinners) onto a sacrificial victim. The ultimate uncovering of the “scapegoat mechanism” is the death of Christ, thought Girard. Girard’s argument boils down to “that Christ in his words and deeds, and finally in his self-sacrifice, demonstrates how he understands this inborn but not irredeemable human characteristic.”
Wilhelm Reich, MD, thought along similar lines. In The Murder of Christ, Reich contended that man is faced with full responsibility for the murder of Christ all through the ages – for the murder of fellow human beings, no matter what the circumstances.
But I say that even as the holy and the righteous cannot rise beyond the highest which is in each one of you,
So the wicked and the weak cannot fall lower than the lowest which is in you also.
And as a single leaf turns not yellow but with the silent knowledge of the whole tree,
So the wrong-doer cannot do wrong without the hidden will of you all. (Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet)
Collective guilt is being always carried off by scapegoats. The European Union (EU) is a dismal failure. The architects of EU cannot look inward. Instead, war in Europe must be blamed. The chosen scapegoat, Vladimir Putin, is provoked into defending Russia. Slowly tensions escalate. In the end, war, and not the EU architects, carries off the blame.
By the light of burning heretics Christ’s bleeding feet I track,
Toiling up new Calvaries ever with the cross that turns not back… (James Russell Lowell, The Present Crisis)
The burning heretics, the “counter-revolutionaries”, toiled up new Calvaries ever. Reich’s “Murder of Christ” continued. Collective guilt had to be sanitized via corporate murder. The single leaf turned not yellow but with the silent knowledge of the whole tree. Behold Putin, who takes away the sins of the world.
And the Son of Man was not crucified once for all,
The blood of the martyrs not shed once for all,
The lives of the Saints not given once for all:
But the Son of Man is crucified always
And there shall be Martyrs and Saints. (T.S. Eliot, Choruses from “The Rock”)
