Back in the beginning of September, mere weeks ago, a refugee crisis in Europe dominated the “news”. But then came a Roman carnival in North America, and the refugees flooding Europe disappeared from the “news”. (The Roman carnival was in other words the visit of Pope Francis to Cuba and the United States.) During the Roman carnival distraction, German Chancellor Angela Merkel swayed from the anti-Russia stance. “Let us broaden the talks, to carry out negotiations about Syria with many actors,” said the East German frau. “And I am meaning Iran, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Russia and other regional players.”
“Russia welcomes Merkel’s proposal on Syria talks,” said the Kremlin aide.
Merkel made the friendly overture to Russia around September 25th. Coincident with the Frau Merkel turning away from the strict anti-Russian diktat of the U.S. State Department came news that Volkswagen emissions were bad with their diesel cars. (Volkswagen is a German automaker.) “VW cooked = Merkel’s punishment for making peace with Putin,” wrote one commentator.
This morning, Ersjdamoo was all set with a rant about the disappearing refugees in Europe. “Hah, newsfakers! What ever happened to the refugees story, hmmm!?” But then along came one Somini Sengupta who stole away my thunder. Writing for the New York Times, Sengupta noticed how the Syria situation had suddenly heated up coincident with the refugee crisis in Europe. “The rush of migrants into Europe, combined with the Continent’s fear that Islamic State fighters may cross porous borders to carry out attacks, has stirred new urgency among Western leaders to address the war in Syria and push harder for an end to it,” wrote Sengupta.
“Refugee Crisis in Europe Prompts Western Engagement in Syria,” was Sengupta’s headline.
So we have refugee crisis in Europe, with many coming from Syria; Germany turning towards Russia for help; and Russia suddenly launching air strikes against ISIS/ISIL/IS in Syria. The idea is to clear out the ISIS/ISIL/IS spiders so that the Syrian refugees can leave Europe and return to their homeland.
But there are potential perils in all this. Suppose a Russian fighter jet bumps wings with an American fighter jet. Or suppose Secretary of State John Kerry draws a line in the sand and says, “I have grave concerns. Do not, you Russians, dare to strike any non-ISIS groups, lest we form a committee here in the United States and issue a scathing report.”
Actually Kerry did say something like this. He does have “grave concerns” and does warn against any air strikes against non-ISIS/non-Al Qaeda targets. But in all the spaghetti strands of Syria, might not some Russian with a vodka hangover press the wrong button in his jet plane?
Suppose that Russia really is “Gog of Magog.” I am not necessarily saying this is so, just supposing it. If Russia is Gog of Magog, then the “hooks in the jaws” of Ezekiel chapter 38 would be ISIS/ISIL/IS. “And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth…” (Ezekiel 38: 4). Call it maybe the secret American/Israeli Gog of Magog plan. A secret unit is established as the bogeyman. This secret unit, funded by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, wears the mask of ISIS/ISIL/IS. The names of the secret unit keep changing, from ISIS, to ISIL, to IS, in order to further disguise its true nature. Astounding reports appear in the “news” outlets: “ISIS eats raw kittens for breakfast”; “ISIL condemns beloved film, ‘It’s A Wonderful Life'”; “IS to Pope: We Will Get You Next.” All this begins to get Russia steamed up, and they now snatch at the bait: It is the hooks in the jaws.
But the best laid plans of mice, men, and the U.S. State Department so oft’ go agley (awry). Adding to the spaghetti strands of Syria are Persia (Iran), Put (Libya), and Cush (Somalia): “Persia, Ethiopia [Cush], and Libya with them; all of them with shield and helmet.” (Ezekiel 38: 5). And now too there are reports of Chinese military “advisers” about to be deployed, even though China does not seem to be mentioned in the Ezekiel prophecy. “China will be helping out the Syrian government in the fight against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS) by sending ‘military advisers,’ media reports have claimed.”
The armies of the world shall gather at Har-Megiddo, near where the borders of Syria, Lebanon, and Israel intersect, for the final battle. “And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.” (Revelation 16: 16).
Or is it all a self-fulfilling prophecy? Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Is the prophecy being inevitably fulfilled, or does the prophecy unconsciously cause world leaders to fulfill it? In the latter case, world leaders, thoroughly unhappy in their individual lives, unconsciously lead the world to mass suicide via yielding to a sense of Biblical inevitability.
