A scientist believes he has received messages from Mars. What the Martians say has enormous effect on the world economy. Then comes one message which seems unbelievable but which has an enormous impact for good. But were the messages really from Mars?
Thus reads the description for my latest video, “Message From Mars”, published to YouTube on September 19, 2016. The clip, which clocks in at 11 minutes and 50 seconds, can hopefully be viewed at the top of today’s blog entry.
SPOILER ALERT: If you have not seen the movie, Red Planet Mars, you may wish to stop reading now.
When decoded, the messages from Mars have a negative effect on the Western economies. What is the average life-span for Martians? Three-hundred years. This causes life insurance companies to halt issuing any new annuities. How productive are the farms on Mars? “We feed 1000 people per acre,” reply the Martians. This causes a crash in prices for farmland. The Martians inform the listeners that they use “cosmic energy” instead of coal and petroleum. In response, coal stops being mined on Earth. Without coal, steel production stops and the economy grinds to a standstill.
The people are not in a panic about contact with extraterrestrial life itself. Rather, they are excited about it. This belies the scenario of the government keeping alien contact secret for fear of mass panic. Panic is not what happens, yet there is a negative impact from the messages being made public.
And so, the U.S. president and his advisers decide that henceforth the messages from Mars must be kept top-secret. This however goes contrary to the beliefs of scientist Chris Cronyn (Peter Graves), who argues for openness in science. At this juncture, the latest Mars message arrives: How do the Martians avoid war and mass destruction? They follow the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount. “This is nonsense,” says scientist Cronyn, but his wife, Linda Cronyn (Andrea King) believes otherwise. In a heated discussion at the White House, she persuades the president to release the latest message to the public.
And the last message causes a miracle. The religious faith of the Russian people, then under Communist domination, surges, and the dictatorship is overthrown. At last, there is Peace On Earth!
All seems wonderful, but then a German scientist, Franz Calder (Herbert Berghof), arrives and says HE has been sending the messages and they are not from Mars at all! However there is a discrepancy in one of the messages: Perhaps the last message had NOT been a fake, but had truly arrived from the great beyond.
The movie, Red Planet Mars, released in 1952, was directed by Harry Horner and was based on a 1932 play, Red Planet, written by John L. Balderston and John Hoare.
