Besides an epidemic of scary clown sightings, now, in Illinois, there have been scary Madigan sightings. He is Michael Madigan, Illinois House Speaker, and the sightings have occurred in relation to a new documentary film, “Madigan: Power, Privilege, Politics”. Generally, the film is perceived as a good thumbnail sketch of political corruption in Illinois.
Thus reads the description for my latest video, “Scary Madigan Sightings”, published to YouTube on October 15, 2016. The clip, which clocks in at 7 minutes and 43 seconds, can hopefully be viewed at the top of today’s blog entry.
Scary clowns are being increasingly sighted. The mainstream “news” is downplaying the stories for fear of adding to incipient panic. Sinister clowns are “the new face of fear”, suggests FreakShowIllinois.com. (Further background: Ronald McDonald in Seclusion, Ersjdamoo’s Blog, October 14, 2016.)
And “Freak Show Illinois” is what we have also in Illinois politics – A freak show. There, Michael Madigan, Illinois House Speaker, rules the State like The Kingfish of old, Huey Long, once ruled Louisiana. Challenging “Kingfish” Madigan, however, is the new Illinois Governor, Bruce Rauner. And Rauner is rumored to have had an influence upon the new documentary film: Madigan: Power, Privilege, Politics.
From reading some reviews of the movie, the consensus at this point seems to be that although the film has somewhat of an anti-Madigan bias, overall it is an excellent sketch of how Illinois politics really works. Michael Madigan is like the leprechaun in the old “Lucky Charms” cereal commercial. He possesses the lucky charms: fund allocations, control of party machinery, and other tidbits which he can grant to or withhold from political underlings. “They’re always after me lucky charms,” giggles Madigan with a knowing, elfin look.
But the laughs are dying down lately in Illinois due to an impossible financial situation here. On October 12, 2016, Reuters reported that Illinois has “issued an ominous warning” that “it may not have enough money to make its fiscal 2017 pension payments on time.”
The State owes $111 billion in UNFUNDED pension liabilities. Jimmy Hoffa once went to jail for this sort of thing but for many Illinois politicians the first order of business is to get themselves re-elected. After that, they can “talk turkey” amongst themselves in a State which is “limping through its second consecutive year without a complete budget…”
Seeing the writing on the wall, like Belshazzar did in ancient times, many Illinoisans are either contemplating or have actually fled the State. Locally, in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, spendaholics in city council are wishing for even higher taxes and bond debt in this small, cosmopolitan city which already charges a 9 percent LUXURY TAX for dish soap!
