Hoover’s Secret History

After collecting dust in storage for almost 50 years, Herbert Hoover’s secret history of World War II and its aftermath was finally published in 2011. In “Freedom Betrayed”, the former U.S. president claims, among other things, that Franklin Delano Roosevelt caused America to enter World War II as a “red herring” diversion to hide FDR’s FAILED economic policies. And we have narrowly avoided a repeat, where Hillary Clinton would have leaded us into World War III in order to help hide the failure of Barack Obama’s economics.

Thus reads the description for my latest video, “Hoover’s Secret History”, published to YouTube on November 15, 2016. The clip, which clocks in at 7 minutes and 52 seconds, can hopefully be viewed at the top of today’s blog entry.

From the inside jacket cover of Hoover’s Freedom Betrayed:

For twenty more years Hoover labored over his manuscript, even as his career continued to be extraordinarily rich in achievement and honors. At the end only one final accomplishment eluded him: publication of his magnum opus, Freedom Betrayed. Following Hoover’s death in 1964, his heirs decided to place his manuscript in storage, where for nearly half a century it has remained unread – until now.

Herbert Hoover’s “secret history” was finally published in 2011. I chanced to come across it while browsing in the local library. The book is massive, with just the Editor’s Introduction covering a whopping 73 pages. From that Introduction I have gleaned that Herbert Hoover feared “collectivism” in all its forms, be they Nazism, Communism, or the New Dealism of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

In 1938, despite the FDR New Deal programs, the U.S. economy slid back into a deep recession. The Great Depression was still there, in defiance of the Rooseveltian “planned economy” solution. [1]

According to Hoover’s perception, it was then, in the face of a ruined legacy of failed New Dealism, that FDR moved towards war with “the time-honored red herring [war] to divert public attention from the failure of the New Deal…” [1]

But Herbert Hoover favored having the Nazis in Germany and the Communists in the Soviet Union mutually destroy each other, and then having the United States merely doing a mop-up operation and claiming the prize. [1]

This failure of New Dealism and diversion into World War II rang a bell with me. The legacy of President Barack Obama, with its failure to defeat the Great Recession which began circa 2008, might be salvaged if a President Hillary Clinton were to lead us into World War III. History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes, Mark Twain is reputed to have said.

However with the almost miraculous defeat of Hillary Clinton in the November 8th election, World War III is looking less likely. A President Donald Trump will probably be working WITH the Russians in the battle against ISIS, whereas a President Hillary Clinton would have favored imposing a “no fly zone” in Syria and thereby risking Russian wrath.

Another thing even disgruntled leftists can take comfort in is that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal now appears to be Dead On Arrival (DOA).
