On a “victory lap” final visit to foreign nations, President Barack Obama was greeted with less than heartfelt thanks. But the zen challenge is to say something nice about Obama. He let loose with some genuine leadership when he recently said that people should take a ‘wait-and-see’ approach on President-elect Donald Trump. However Janet Yellen of the “Federal” Reserve may be grinding her teeth and about to unleash a rate hike “coincident” to the surprise election of Donald Trump.
Thus reads the description for my latest video, “Foreign Riots Against Obama”, published to YouTube on November 21, 2016. The clip, which clocks in at 8 minutes and 49 seconds, can hopefully be viewed at the top of today’s blog entry.
In Greece, the leftist Syriza party governs. No doubt the supposedly left-wing Obama expected a friendly welcome there. However, instead he was greeted by rioters.
Disappointed by how his final “victory lap” had begun, outgoing Obama turned his eyes to Peru. He must have been expecting a friendly “Bienvenidos el presidente!” there. Instead, outgoing Obama encountered protesters scuffling with police. “Fuera Obama” (Obama go home) read one of the protester’s signs.
About a year ago, I published to YouTube my video, Obama’s Tuna Recipe. “It is The Zen Challenge,” I wrote in the video’s description. “Find something nice to say about President Barack Obama.” In that attempt at the zen challenge, I came up with a few nice things, including Obama’s tuna recipe.
I thought I had found something else nice to say about Obama when I did yesterday’s video. Reuters reported on November 20, 2016 that the outgoing Obama had said that same day that “people should take a ‘wait-and-see’ approach on President-elect Donald Trump.” This was in line with what I myself had urged in my earlier video, Civil War Thanksgiving! If you recall, for about a week after the surprise election of Donald Trump there had been an eruption of anti-Trump hysteria. “Cool it,” both myself and Obama urged.
However a cynical part of me now thinks the anti-Trump hysteria had already mostly spent itself by the time Obama finally urged calm.
And one last thing: Fed Chair Janet Yellen on Thursday, November 17th made her strongest comments to date in favor for a policy tightening in December, telling Congress an increase could be “appropriate relatively soon.” And now comes news that “The Fed appears likely to raise its key interest rate for only the second time in a decade when it meets Dec. 13-14. It last raised rates in December 2015.” Maybe this “Federal” Reserve rate hike is a coincidence, but the timing is interesting, coming as it does almost immediately after the election of Trump.
