A new Orwellian state is emerging. Senate bill S.2692 is one sign of this. An Orwellian hate campaign was used against Donald Trump. Facebook has begun censoring, but do you have free speech in a shopping mall? Information is an avalanche. The government decides it, not you, shall decide what is credible. Is the world speeding up, or are we slowing down, making it only seem like the world is speeding up?
Thus reads the description for my latest video, “New Orwellian State”, published to YouTube on December 18, 2016. The clip, which clocks in at 8 minutes and 56 seconds, can hopefully be viewed at the top of today’s blog entry.
The Two Minutes Hate, from George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, is a daily period in which Party members of the society of Oceania must watch a film depicting the Party’s enemies and express their hatred for them for exactly two minutes. This was the Democratic Party campaign strategy in the recent election: “Hate Trump” followed by the rescuing image of Big Sister, Hillary Clinton. This is one factor in the emerging new Orwellian state.
Another indicator of the new Orwellian state involves an emerging “Ministry of Truth”. In Orwell’s novel, the Ministry of Truth is the propaganda ministry. As with the other ministries in the novel, the name Ministry of Truth is a misnomer because in reality it serves the opposite: it is responsible for any necessary falsification of historical events. The Facebook social network is going to partner with the Poynter International Fact-Checking Network, which includes groups such as Snopes, to evaluate articles flagged by Facebook users. If an article is ruled to be “fake”, it will be demoted. An ad hoc Ministry of Truth is being formed, however there is some leeway in the interpretation: Is there free speech in a shopping mall? Facebook is private property and the free speech issue is nebulous in this situation.
Not so nebulous is Senate bill S.2692 – “Countering Information Warfare Act of 2016”. Foreign governments, claims S.2692, “including the Governments of the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China, use disinformation and other propaganda tools to undermine the national security objectives of the United States and key allies and partners.” It is the “Fake News Plot”, which Almighty Snopes, before whom too many kneel and worship, has deemed to be T-R-U-E. At least this is implied by Almighty Snopes having provided a “Field Guide” to “Fake News Sites.”
According to the Zero Hedge web site, the House of Representatives has already passed “H.R. 6393, Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017”, which “seeks to crack down on websites suspected of conducting Russian propaganda.”
Who though is to decide what is True and what is Fake? Sed quis custodiet ipsos custodes? (Who will ward the warders?) Who will guard that Almighty Snopes itself is not fake?
It is the new Orwellian state which can be seen, attempting to emerge into the daylight. Can Donald Trump stop this (assuming he makes it to the January 20th inauguration)? Or will it by then have become a fait accompli (a done deal)?
