Summer is the time of the blockbuster movies. For example we currently have Wonder Woman and The Mummy. For those who prefer more “reality” in their entertainment, we have this summer’s Russia-gate soap opera.
To signal the start of the “reality” soap opera, Russia-gate, one Reality Winner was recently arrested for leaking.
Today, warm-up acts for tomorrow’s James Comey testimony will be appearing before a congressional committee. Present at a Senate hearing today will be Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, “acting” FBI Director Andrew McCabe, National Security Agency Director Admiral Mike Rogers and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.
It is likely that C-SPAN will provide unfiltered coverage. They are online at https://www.c-span.org/
“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” wrote George Santayana. In the summer of 1973, the Watergate soap opera pre-empted afternoon television “programming.” At the time, we thought it was real. Only later did we learn the event had been scripted, most prominently by Alexander Haig and his Naval Intelligence briefer, Bob Woodward. (See the book, Silent Coup, by Len Colodny.)
But “Tut, tut,” says former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper. “I think if you compare the two that Watergate pales, really, in my view, compared to what we’re confronting now,” Clapper told reporters in Canberra, Australia’s capital.
Of course “Clapper” would say that! He is “clapping” for the promotion of the soap opera sequel to Watergate! Do you expect “Clapper” to say, “Ho-hum. Been there, done that. It is just another Watergate”?
“America needs a full-time president, and a full-time congress,” said Richard Nixon in his televised resignation speech of August 8, 1974. Instead of those, the important business of the nation had been diverted by a soap opera. And it’s happening again! Even if, in the end, there is not another Seven Days In May coup d’etat, still the Hillary Clinton faction of the Democrat Party will have been successful in obstructing the hopes and plans of the Constitutionally-elected U.S. president, Donald Trump.
