On February 28, 1993 seventy-six ATF agents, accompanied by three helicopters, attempted to conduct a surprise raid on the Branch Davidian’s home and church. We now approach the 25th anniversary of that raid.
A documentary film, Waco: The Rules of Engagement, includes infrared video taken by a surveillance helicopter which clearly shows sniper fire, as well as tanks firing incendiary devices into the building on “Day 51” of the Waco siege, April 19, 1993.
How did the documentary film manage to obtain the secret infrared video footage? It is widely believed to have been leaked by William Colby, former director of the CIA.
William Colby had revealed matters deep and dangerous, and he paid a price: On April 27, 1996, Colby set out from his weekend home in Rock Point, Maryland on a solo canoe trip. His canoe was found the following day on a sandbar in the Wicomico River, a tributary of the Potomac, approximately a quarter mile from his home. On May 6, Colby’s body was found in a marshy riverbank lying facedown not far from where his canoe was found.
Carlos Ghigliotti also delved into matters deep and dangerous. He too paid a price. The police discovered his corpse in an advanced state of decomposition at the office where he worked alone–Infrared Technologies Corp. His specialty was analyzing videotapes made during the infamous 1993 Waco siege.
The Washington Post ironically titled its report on Ghigliotti as “The Man Who Knew Too Much.” This is ironic because an earlier book about Richard Case Nagell, first published years before the Post article, was also titled The Man Who Knew Too Much. Richard Case Nagell did not pay the ultimate price suffered by Colby and Ghigliotti, but author Dick Russell, in the chapter of his book titled “The Railroading of Richard Case Nagell,” describes the legal hell he endured.
In his recent book, Hit List: An In-Depth Investigation into the Mysterious Deaths of Witnesses to the JFK Assassination, Richard Belzer’s findings are absolutely staggering; some cases were clearly linked to a “clean-up operation” after the murder of President Kennedy, while others were the result of “other forces”.
